Funky Foto Flashback: In the Dorm

It’s a winter day in the Midwest, and I’m writing a paper in my dorm room. I was an undergrad, which would be about 1988. Look! Big 80’s glasses! That thing I’m typing my paper on? A typewriter! At least it was electric, and it even had spell check. It would beep if I spelled a word wrong. I still had to look up the word in a dictionary. My handy dandy typewriter even had auto-correct! Ooh, Ahh….

Funky Foto Flashback: Family

Isn’t my mom (on the right) stylish? She’s so beautiful! (and thin!)

My dad’s mom is standing with my mom in this picture, sometime in the 60’s. My grandma knew that my mom was pregnant with me when she died, but she never got to see me. She died from breast cancer in 1968. While I was visiting with my mom this past weekend, she confessed to me that she still feels sad that Dad’s mom never knew his children. We feel like we know Grandma, however, from all the stories that Dad and his brothers and sisters tell.

Here’s a fun story. During my grandmother’s last pregnancy, she sat down on a kitchen chair and fell to the floor. The chair had broken, and her husband and children couldn’t stop laughing. When she finally went into labor…she had two babies! My dad and uncle were born; one twin weighed eight pounds, the other nine! No wonder the chair had broken. My aunt says they felt a little guilty for laughing at their mother.

Funky Foto Flashback: The Girls

When my sister and I were little, we were known as “The Girls.” Here we are with my mom at my grandparents’ house. I’m on the left, my sister is on the right.

Now I have my own girls. This picture is from Mother’s Day.

Funky Foto Flashback: Doggies

My grandma made all her grandchildren a stuffed dog when we were little. In my family, we affectionately called our dog by the same name: Doggy. Here’s me with my doggy.

Keeping up the tradition, my mom followed the same pattern and made doggies for her two grandchildren. Here is Lily hugging her doggy:

When Emmy received her doggy for her first birthday, something about him terrified her:

Fortunately, she loves her doggy now, and gives him lots of hugs and kisses!

Funky Foto Flashback: Four Generations

I write this post with a little bit of worry in my stomach. I talked to Mom today, and she is in the hospital. Some of my long time readers may remember that she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was forty, and remained cancer free for many, many years. About four years ago, she discovered that the cancer metastasized to her bones. There are spots all over her body, but until recently hormone treatments had controlled the cancer. Last November she underwent radiation treatments on her skull and brain to stop the worst of those spots from growing.

This week, she had severe pain in her chest, and so she went to the ER. They found a broken rib, and the broken bone is right where a cancerous spot had formed.

She is doing well, has a great attitude, and is determined to beat this thing!!

My mom.

This picture, of four generations, shows me as a baby (in 1969, if you must know!); my mom and great-grandmother are sitting on the couch with my grandfather behind them.

This picture also shows four generations; my grandfather, me holding Lily, and my grandmother are sitting on the couch, with my mom behind us. My Grandpa could never get enough of Lily. He could have watched her play for hours. The love he had for his great-granddaughter in this picture is so clear.
